01 // The brief

Ostra runs 14 clinics, and patients booked by phone because the old portal failed screen readers, keyboard users and anyone on a small, older phone.

The brief was a single booking portal that every patient can use independently, and that passes WCAG 2.2 AA in a formal third-party audit.

02 // Process

How it came together

Step 01

Audit what exists

An initial audit found 63 issues, from missing form labels to focus traps in the date picker. Each one was logged with the real-world impact on a patient.

Step 02

Test with real users

Sessions with screen reader, switch and voice-control users drove decisions more than any checklist. The date picker was rebuilt twice based on what we saw.

Step 03

Accessible by default

Every component shipped with keyboard behaviour, focus states and announcements built in, backed by automated checks in the CI pipeline.

04 // Results

The portal passed an independent WCAG 2.2 AA audit with zero critical findings. Phone bookings fell by 42% as more patients were able to book on their own.
