Halden dispatchers planned daily routes across four spreadsheets and a phone. A typical morning of manual routing took around 40 minutes before a single truck left the yard.
The brief was a single dispatch dashboard that shows fleet, orders and delays together, and suggests routes dispatchers can accept, adjust or reject.
How it came together
Step 01
Shadow the dispatch floor
I spent three days sitting beside dispatchers, logging every tool switch. Eleven context switches per route was the number that shaped the whole project.
Step 02
Map view first, tables second
Early prototypes led with tables. Dispatchers kept asking for the map, so the final layout centers on a live map with a slide-over order list.
Step 03
Suggested routes with override
The system proposes a route, but every suggestion can be dragged, reordered or rejected. Overrides are logged so the routing logic improves over time.
Step 04
A shared design system
Dense tables, status chips and filters were built once as a system so the next three internal tools could reuse them.

All 22 dispatchers moved to the dashboard within a month. Routing time dropped from 40 minutes to 9, and the design system has since been adopted by three other internal teams.
